Amsterdam Food Guide

Me and my boyfriend (Antony) visited Amsterdam in April 2022, and it was the best trip ever. The food in Amsterdam is nothing short of amazing, their portions are huge and they have so much variety of restaurants all over that it really is hard to decide where to eat.

In the months coming up to our trip to Amsterdam, I did try to do some research into what restaurants were nearby where we were staying that were worth looking into and booking but had no luck at all finding any recommendations. This is why I am writing this blog, particularly for anyone looking to visit Amsterdam, and wanting to know some great restaurants to visit whilst you are there. All the places we visited were super affordable, and nothing too fancy.

For reference, the hotel me and Antony stayed at whilst in Amsterdam was the Ibis City Stopera.

Before I get into my food guide, if you're looking for a travel guide, with things to do whilst in Amsterdam and how to go about booking them, as well as my hotel review- read my other blog post here- Amsterdam Travel Guide 2022 (rhicardsramblings.com)

Breakfast

Tasty Bakery Amsterdam

For a quick breakfast before visiting the Anne Frank House, me and Antony popped into a little tiny cafe/ bakery for our breakfast. This was really tiny inside and only had about 5 tables but that is the standard in Amsterdam as most of the buildings are super long and thin. Antony ordered a classic fry-up, which came with sausages, eggs, toast, bacon, and beans and I opted for a croissant with jam and butter. I am genuinely not lying when I say this was the best croissant I have ever had in my life! It was so fresh and warm, served with a thick strawberry jam and cream. Another thing I love about this little place is that they serve freshly squeezed orange juice which was so refreshing.

Gewaeght Cafe

Before heading back to Schipol airport, me and Antony headed into the center of Amsterdam to try to find a little breakfast place when we came across Gewaeght Cafe. I loved the decor here, it was basically a little pub that had lots of Spanish-themed decorations. I think this place would also be a great pub by the time night comes so would have loved to experience it at night. For breakfast, of course, Antony had a fry-up again as it is his favourite which he said was lovely and did look really good. I went for the french styled breakfast as I was still thinking about how good the croissant was in Tasty Bakery and saw that the french breakfast included one. This was really yummy, and I loved the cheese and ham with the bread as it was something different from the usual fry-up I am used to back home.

Lunch

Orff

We arrived in Amsterdam at 8 o'clock in the morning, and we were not allowed to check into our hotel room until 2 pm so we decided to do some wandering around and have a bite to eat to pass some time. The weather was scorching that day we arrives to we were wanting to sit outside and watch people pass and we came across Orff cafe. This was an extremely Netherlands-themed cafe, with the menu having little to no English. We ended up getting some chips from here which tasted good. I just loved and really rated the outside area of this cafe, and really recommend you go here if it is a nice day and you want to sit outside and people watch.

Lunchcafe Waterloo

Now, this little cafe I can say I cannot recommend enough. It is super aesthetically pleasing inside with floral-themed decor, and the windows also open up wide which is also great for a nice day to sit. We came here for a late brunch before heading to the Johan Cruijff arena, as the subway station was right across from the cafe. I had a toasted tuna and cheese baguette from here and it was unreal, as you can see there was plenty of cheese on there! Antony again had a fry-up, which looked incredible. This little cafe was a little on the pricier side, but I think definitely worth it as my meal tasted so good and even cured my terrible hangover from the night before.

Dinner

Stars Burgers

This little restaurant I would confidently describe as a hidden gem. After being absolutely starving from the long day of traveling me and Antony decided to just go to the first place we saw, closest to our hotel which happened to be Stars Burgers. I think this was also a takeaway place as well as a sit-in restaurant. The restaurant is pretty small again like most are, but there were 2 other couples inside. I ordered a beef burger with fries which tasted so good, and Antony had a pepperoni pizza which honestly looked incredible and I wished I would have taken a photo of it. Prices in this place were super cheap, and my highlight of being here was that the glasses of rose wine were 2 euro 50 each!!! That is cheaper than Wetherspoon prices. The staff were also very nice so I definitely recommend it here if you are looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful, and not too fancy.

San Giovanni

This little Italian restaurant was exactly what me and Antony were looking for on the second night of our trip. We were both really wanting an Italian and this one caught our eye as the prices were so reasonable. I opted for spaghetti carbonara which was excellent, and Antony had a pepperoni Pizza again. The garlic bread we had here was fabulous too and we also had fries. Our meal here was great and I recommend coming here or little places like this rather than going to the big huge fancy Italians in the city center. The wine was also really cheap in here also and it was just a 2-minute walk from our hotel which was ideal for us.

Snacks

Pannenkoekenhuis De Corrousel

This little restaurant/ cafe was magical and I absolutely loved sitting there. This was a bit of a fair walk out of the center of Amsterdam, as we were heading to the Heineken tour which was directly beside this place. However, you have to come here for the dutch pancakes! They had so many different toppings to go with them, I went with Nutella, and me and Antony shared them. I saw so many people raving about these dutch pancakes so when I came across this place it was a must-visit. They had a huge carousel in the center of the restaurant too and played really good music.

Fries stand

One thing so many people kept telling me to have when I was in Amsterdam was their fries, and I am a mega chip lover so it was a certainty that I tried these. The fries in Amsterdam are super popular, and there is stands literally all over the city center where you can buy them- they are super cheap also. They have every sauce you can think of- I went with mayonnaise- basic but effective. I so enjoyed these and devoured them in minutes- I honestly wished I had bought two!
