The Beginners Guide To Astrology PT1: Reading Your Birth Chart

Astrology is something that has always interested me, and it wasn't until recently I actually decided to look into it and try to obtain a deeper knowledge of what it is really about. As I learn more and more about Astrology, I thought it would be a good idea to write some blogs to help others who also want to learn more but like me, don't know where to start. Let's learn together!

Before trying to dive right into the deep end of astrology, I found it helpful to try and understand what it is really about, and why it is so popular with many.

Astrology is understanding the birth chart, and the study of cycles and movement of the planets. It is an extremely useful tool for healing and transformation, and on a deeper level, can unlock a deeper spiritual understanding and connection of the universe. Astrology is something many like to use as a form of self realization, and use it to focus on their dreams and aspirations, which can be very helpful in motivation and self improvement.

When I first tried to understand astrology, I completely disregarded the fact that it was actually a form of self realization, and jumped straight into looking at friends and everyone around me zodiac signs. But what you must remember is people have free will, and their actions are not based off of their zodiac signs at all. Astrology is not meant to be a substitute for personal responsibility or self-awareness, but rather, a tool to enhance it.

Astrology gives to free reign on stripping your life back to the basics, and understanding key points in your life. It allows you to see 'blind spots' and focus more on things that matter most in life- emphasizing your goals and aims.

Before getting into the deep stuff, I recommend reading your birth chart before anything, although the diagram may not make any sense to you, read the statement underneath, and have a look to see how many points relate to yourself- you may realize there are a lot more than you thought.

There are many birth chart websites, but the one I like to use is Free Birth Chart and Report (astrolibrary.org) .

In order to get your birth chart reading, you will need these specific details (the more specific you are with them, the more accurate your reading will be.)

  1. Place of birth

  2. Time of birth

  3. Date of birth

For an example, this is what my chart looks like. There will then be an in depth report of where all the planets were when you were born. This will make no sense at this point, but it gives you somewhere to start. When you learn how to read your birth chart, you can take advantage of this knowledge and use it to improve your life.

The first step on reading your birth chart is knowing your sun, moon and rising signs. These signs focus on where the sun and moon were at the time of your birth and their locations in the sky can influence your moods and personality. Astrologists say the sun sign shows what you want, and the moon reveals what you need.

Your sun sign is basically just more commonly known as your star sign, mines is cancer.

The moon sign is considered the second most important influence in your horoscope chart after the sun, and this represents your emotions and inner mood. It is based on where the moon was when you were born and what position around the moon you were in, this will be different from your sun (star) sign, mines is Sagittarius.

Your rising sign is what you are showing to the world and how you are perceiving yourself to others, and the impression you give off. Note, some people also refer to rising as ascendant or ASC. Mines is Leo.

In short,

Sun= Personality

Moon= Inner self – the you that only you truly know

Ascendant= Represents the first impression you make on others.

Mine would be Cancer sun, Sagittarius Moon and Leo Rising.

The next thing to look at when understanding how to read your birth chart is by taking a look at the inner numbers, these are numbered 1-12 and are referred to as 'houses'. Each house represents an important aspect of your life. The table below shows what each number represents. Remember, the key to reading a birth chart is to look at the corresponding house, rising zodiac sign, and planetary alignment.

One thing to always remember when reading a birth chart, is that the chart must be taken as a whole, rather than piece by piece. You cannot take one part of the chart and decide it defines a whole person, as this is a mistake and is not wholely accurate. you must weave it all together, and lace it with the Rising Sign, to get an accurate picture.

Next you can take a look and focus on the symbols within the chart, which refer to planets in the signs. Here is a list of what each of the symbols mean, in case you are confused with the symbol meanings.

Now you know what each of the symbols are for, you can see what planet is in which zodiac sign. In my chart, you can see that Neptune is in Aquarius, Mars is in Sagittarius and Venus is in Taurus. From this information you can then look at interpretations. You can then go to this website Birth Chart Interpretations -Planets in Signs and Houses (astrolibrary.org) and press on your options found in your chart and have a read. This is only a rough reading as you need to add your own insight and goals into the mix.

There are 8 planets: Neptune, Pluto, Uranus, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus.

Each planet represents a specific aspect of your identity. Here is a list of each planet and the thing that they represent.

  • Sun: Basic personality

  • Moon: Mood and emotions

  • Mercury: Mind and communication.

  • Venus: Love and attraction

  • Mars: Drive and energy

  • Jupiter: Growth, luck, and wisdom

  • Saturn: Disciplines, fears, and challenges

  • Uranus: Change and originality

  • Neptune: Dreams and healing

  • Pluto: Transformation and power

For a better understanding of planets, signs and houses- I found this little guide helpful.

The planet in the sign will focus on the house (the numbers which we looked at earlier). The planet is the "what," the sign is "how" that "what" is done, and the House is "where" it takes place. Here is a handy reminder to use when interpreting your natal chart:

Here is a good example to help understand:

Say a person has Saturn in Capricorn in the 7th House, which could manifest as a reserved (Capricorn) attitude in love relationships (7th House). Then, say this same individual has Venus in Sagittarius in the 11th House. This person will be friendly and outgoing (Sagittarius) in social situations and groups (11th House), but unemotional and detached (although dependable) in love relationships (Saturn in Capricorn in the 7th).

I hope this helped understand the basics to some extent, and that I haven't just confused you even more. As I learn more about astrology and birth charts, I will be posting more on how you too can expand your knowledge on the science of astrology.

To finish off, here are a good few websites which will also explain the basics in detail (maybe a bit better than I have..). I also recommend watching YouTube videos if you are more of a visual learner.
