Review: Gypsy’s Revenge

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

Gypsy’s Revenge is a documentary by Jesse Vile which focuses on the relationship of mother and daughter Dee Dee Blanchard and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. This is a shocking and mind twisting documentary that will be sure to leave watchers invested in the story as whole.

The documentary starts with the introduction to Gypsy Rose and her life as a child, we see her relationship with her mother blossoming and it seems all so happy and easy going. According to Dee Dee, Gypsy had several illnesses such as leukaemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy, all as well as having the mental capacity of a 7 year old due to brain damage. We soon learn further into the story that this is in fact all kids, and that Dee Dee uses this as a gateway make herself out as this amazing mother and carer for her daughter and uses it to make money.

Dee Dee kept Gypsy Rose isolated all her life, fully away from anyone who may form a bond or relationship that may tamper with the mother and daughter bond they had already formed, including keeping Gypsy away from her father. Dee Dee also abused her daughter mentally and physically throughout her life. We see many different interviews from Gypsy’s father, friends and family. All who play an extremely important part in this documentary helping to tell Gypsy’s story.

Gypsy Rose’s story has one main plot twist which makes her story more bizarre than already is. Infact when Gypsy gets to age 18 she meets a boy on the internet, named Nick Godejohn who she soon falls in love with and wants to start a new life with. The only way Gypsy would be able to follow her dreams and pursue her relationship with Nick would be to take her mother out of the equation, which is what she eventually asks her internet lover Nick, to do.

Nick had several mental disorders but these did not stop him being madly in love with Gypsy, he would do anything to be with her, including killing her mother Dee Dee. Nick and Gypsy then began to plot a murder, eventually having Nick stab Dee Dee to death before both running away in hopes to start a new life. Of course both Nick and Gypsy were caught by the police days later and sentenced to prison.

The documentary shows us footage of Nick and Gypsy Rose in court, which really shocks the viewers as you can see the fear and shock in both their faces whilst in the court room. Nick was sentenced to life imprisonment for first degree murder, and Gypsy sentenced for 10 years for 2nd degree murder. The sentencing I feel was not fair for Gypsy, her mother took away 20 years of her life and the government, who constantly failed her in many ways are stealing another 10.

Overall the documentary is a bizarre and unique watch that I would honestly rate 10/10. It shines light on the case and focuses on how Gypsy is infact the victim, even though she committed murder, this is not to be forgotten.
