A Look Back At 10 Of The Most Iconic Diana Dresses

Updated: Nov 3, 2022

It has been 25 whole years since the death of Princess Diana, but despite the long empty years without her, her iconic fashion statements live on.

Diana's wardrobe is the most scrutinized wardrobe of all time, with many iconic outfits such as her casual athleisure that can be seen recreated by many celebrities in 2022, such as Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid, to the iconic black 'Revenge dress.' Fashion critics all across the world loved Diana, they loved her for standing out against the rest of the royals, and not being afraid to have her own personal style, despite the royal dress rules. She wore just about everything she wasn't supposed to, which is why her iconic style had such a huge impact on the general public.

So let's take a look back at my favourite Diana looks.

1.

The Dress: Dress by Hachi. This dress raised over £60,000 at a Christie’s auction.

The Occasion: Octopussy, the James Bond premiere June, 1983.

Why I Love It: I love this Diana outfit, she chose to go extremely classy in this gorgeous white cocktail number that I can see many celebrities still wearing to this day. She outshone all the stars on the red carpet and when you take a look at what others were wearing to the premiere, she really does stand out from the crowd. She fits the James Bond theme perfectly and her silver accessories tie in perfectly with the gorgeous gown.

2.

The Dress: Custom-made creation by Bruce Oldfield.

The Occasion: A black-tie dance.

Why I Love It: How can you not be obsessed with this perfect princess ballgown! I think this dress has to take the crown for me in terms of Diana's iconic outfits- it is just gorgeous! The cinched in waist makes her body look absolutely amazing and fits her perfectly. I love the bright cherry red colour on her skin tone, it just suits her perfectly- she looks effortly gorgeous here.

3.

The Dress: Bruce Oldfield power dress

The Occasion: A Royal visit to Melbourne, Australia in 1985.

Why I Love It: Again, the bright cherry red colour suits her perfectly, and I think of it as her signature colour. I just cannot get over the silhouette of this dress and the amazing shoulder pads with the slash neck- just perfection. I know if this dress was to be on sale in a high street store, it would still be snatched up and sold out now, even in 2022. This dress is just so classy and super timeless, and again her silver accessories look great with it.

4.

The Dress: Designed by Christina Stambolian

The Occasion: At the Serpentine Gallery in summer 1994.

Why I Love It: The little black dress that speaks a thousand words, this is Diana's most well known iconic outfits, better known as 'The Revenge Dress'- how could I not include it in my top 10? It truely is iconic! At this stage in Dianas life various scandals, books and tapes had been released and published about her, and Dianas response to this? to turn up in this beautiful little black dress with a classy black heel- the Diana rebellion stage had well and truly begun. The iconic huge statement piece pearl and diamond choker also just elevates this look along with her bouncy volumized hair, she looks incredible here- and she knows it! This dress has since been auctioned for a whopping $74,000.

5.

The Dress: The bois de rose taffeta strapless dress by Catherine Walker The Occasion: When The Whales Came, film premiere in 1989. Why I Love It: This dress I couldn't help but be obsessed with, I love the bold pattern of the blue contrasting against the light pink material, as well as the huge big bow on her side. This dress pushed many of the boundaries of what the Buckingham Palace style guide allowed, such as the bandau style top, but Diana doesn't seem to be phased at all. Again, she is wearing the iconic pearl necklace and diamond earrings, with her statement silver clutch and heels which she paired with almost all of her outfits. This dress again was auctioned off after Dianas death, and raised $50,000. I also can't help to think with this one how cute this dress would look as a mini dress- I know everyone would go mad if this was to be brought out by a fashion brand! Asos, take notes.

6.

The Dress: A Catherine Walker design

The Occasion: Arriving at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London for a charity benefit.

Why I Love It: This was another one of Diana's most topical and controversial dresses, as the thigh-high split and low swooping neckline is basically a royal offence. I think Diana looks amazing in this dress, and the green really suits her- as we didn't see her in green very often. The green shoes and accessories tie in perfectly with the look not to mention the gorgeous green necklace she is wearing. I love the cut of this dress and love the high shoulder pads as this is just so classic and typical for Diana. Yet again, this dress was also auctioned off in 2013 after her death, this time for £170,000.

7.

The Dress: Bruce Oldfield design

The Occasion: A View To A Kill, James Bond premiere in 1985.

Why We Love It: Now this, is what an iconic fashion moment looks like. Diana channelled her inner Marilyn Monroe here, and absolutely smashed it. This gorgeous plaitted gold dress makes her look flawless, and is definitely a statement piece that everyone will remember her by. Again, the low cut and majorly madded shoulders are incorporated into this dress which just makes it even more recognisable as a Diana dress. I love this one so much.

8.

The Dress: Bruce Oldfield design

The Occasion: America’s Cup Ball, 1986.

Why I Love It: Diana channelled major flamenco dancer emoji vibes here- and I'm living for it. Rather than buckle under the strict royal dress guidelines, Diana upped the ante and turned up in this long evening tulle dress with a bare neck and statement mix and match black and red gloves. This is a super 80s vibe dress that looks absolutely flawless on her, and I love that she wasn't afraid of mixing up her vibe and trying new things.

9.

The Dress: Catherine Walker design

The Occasion: A tour in Hong Kong, 1989.

Why I Love It: Yet another controversial dress, Diana wore a gorgeous, more classical white embellished gown with an extreme collar white matching jacket. Diana got a whole lot of stick for this outfit, with the dress being dubbed 'The Elvis Dress' by many members of the public. I personally love this outfit, despite it looking like Elvis suit or not- she pulls it off effortlessly.

10.

The Dress: Catherine Walker design

The Occasion: A royal visit to Kuwait, 1989.

Why I Love It: I think this is the most modest it gets in terms of Diana's outfits, and despite her actually following the royal dress code rules this time, of course, she looks amazing either way. Diana loves a good Catherine Walker designed dress, if you can't tell already, and all her dresses designed by Catherine suit her aesthetic, style and body perfectly. I love the ruched waist on this dress, it pulls her in all of the right places and I love the floral upper body mixed with the pinky lilac satin skirt. Again, Diana looks flawless here- she could pull anything off!
